Beans Porridge, also known as Ewa Riro in Yoruba, is a popular and nutritious Nigerian dish made with stewed beans cooked in a flavorful sauce. It is rich in protein and commonly eaten as a main meal for lunch or dinner.


Key Ingredients:

  1. Brown or Black-eyed Beans – The main ingredient.
  2. Palm Oil – Provides a rich flavor and color.
  3. Onions – Adds depth to the taste.
  4. Pepper – Scotch bonnet (ata rodo) or chili for heat.
  5. Crayfish – Ground to enhance flavor.
  6. Seasoning Cubes – For taste enhancement.
  7. Salt – To season.
  8. Vegetables (optional) – Spinach, pumpkin leaves, or scent leaves can be added.
  9. Fish or Meat (optional) – Stockfish, smoked fish, or beef can be included.
  10. Plantains (optional) – Sometimes cooked with ripe or unripe plantains for added texture.

Preparation:

  1. Soak the Beans – Reduce cooking time by soaking them for a few hours.
  2. Cook the Beans – Boil until soft and tender.
  3. Prepare the Sauce – Heat palm oil, fry onions, pepper, and crayfish.
  4. Combine – Add the cooked beans to the sauce and simmer.
  5. Season and Serve – Stir thoroughly, season to taste, and serve hot.
