Akara is a popular Nigerian snack made from blended black-eyed peas (beans), deep-fried into crispy bean cakes. It is widely enjoyed across Nigeria and West Africa, often served as a breakfast meal or street food.


Key Ingredients:

  1. Black-eyed peas – The primary ingredient, peeled and blended.
  2. Onions – Adds flavor and texture.
  3. Scotch bonnet peppers (ata rodo) – Provides heat and spice.
  4. Salt – For seasoning.
  5. Vegetable oil – For deep-frying.
  6. Water – Used sparingly to blend the beans into a smooth batter.

Preparation:

  1. Peel the beans – Remove the outer skin by soaking and rubbing.
  2. Blend the beans – Grind with onions, peppers, and a little water to form a thick, smooth paste.
  3. Season the batter – Add salt and spices if desired.
  4. Fry the mixture – Scoop spoonfuls into hot oil and fry until golden brown.
  5. Drain and serve – Remove from oil, drain excess oil, and serve hot.
