Fried Plantains, known as Dodo in Nigeria, is a popular and beloved dish made from ripe plantains that are sliced and deep-fried until golden brown and crispy on the outside, while remaining soft and sweet on the inside. It is a versatile dish enjoyed as a snack, side dish, or main dish in Nigerian cuisine. Fried plantains are often paired with a variety of other Nigerian foods, such as beans, egg sauce, stew, or jollof rice.

Fried plantains are a favorite comfort food across West Africa, especially in Nigeria, and are commonly served at family gatherings, parties, or even as a quick meal at home.


Key Ingredients:

  1. Ripe Plantains – The main ingredient; ripe plantains are sweet, soft, and perfect for frying.
  2. Vegetable Oil – Used for deep frying the plantains.
  3. Salt – Optional, for seasoning (some people like to add a pinch of salt to enhance the sweetness).
  4. Pepper (optional) – Some people like to season the fried plantains with a little chili or pepper for a spicy kick.

Preparation:

  1. Peel the plantains – Cut off both ends of the plantains, then peel off the skin. Cut the plantains into diagonal or round slices, depending on preference.
  2. Heat the oil – Heat vegetable oil in a deep frying pan or pot over medium heat.
  3. Fry the plantains – Carefully place the plantain slices into the hot oil and fry until they turn golden brown on both sides (usually about 3-5 minutes per side).
  4. Drain and season – Remove the fried plantains from the oil and drain excess oil on paper towels. If desired, sprinkle a little salt over them for added flavor.

  • With Beans – Fried plantains are often paired with Ewa Agoyin (mashed beans) or Beans Porridge for a hearty and delicious meal.
  • With Egg Sauce – A common combination is fried plantains served with egg sauce (scrambled eggs with tomatoes and onions).
  • With Jollof Rice – Plantains make a great accompaniment to Jollof rice, one of Nigeria’s most iconic dishes.
  • As a Snack – Fried plantains are commonly enjoyed as a quick snack, especially with a cold drink.
  • With Stews – It is also served with various Nigerian stews like Egusi Soup, Afang Soup, or Tomato Stew.

They are especially popular in Nigerian street food culture, and vendors selling fried plantains are a common sight in many urban and rural areas.
